DailyPhotos > Melissa OShaughnessy  > Photo-a-Day > Photo of the Day 2009
On February 11, 2009, bored by the winter weather and in need of a creative project, I decided to challenge myself to take a photo every day for a year. I didn't, at first, plan on "going public" with my photos (this may be painfully obvious if you look at the earliest photos in this gallery), but once I joined the SmugMug Daily Photo Community and started receiving such great support from all the members here, I started working a little harder and taking the undertaking more seriously. Thus far, the project has been (mostly) a joy and a creative boon, although there are those days when I wake up wondering what on earth I'm going to photograph. Yet the great thing I've learned on this journey is that there's ALWAYS something, if I just look hard enough.

It was a wet and blustery November day, and after too much turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie it was a challenge to go out and find a photo of the day. I have photographed this window at the local garden center before (the background is actually a reflection of the scene behind me in the glass I was shooting through), so it was an easy grab for a lazy day.

Thanksgiving is my very favorite holiday, and though we are a smaller bunch this year, I am grateful for so many things, my wonderful family (near and far) above all.
Melissa OShaughnessy > It was a day for cooking, not photography...a quick stop at the local cemetery with the lensbaby on the camera. Now it's time to brine the turkey!

The sun came out this afternoon and my local greenhouse beckoned. I love to shoot this old structure, as I usually find it inspiring--and empty. Not empty today, however--I startled the bejesus out of a Garden Center worker who was trimming wreaths for the town Christmas decorations. I had no clue he was there and he had even less of a clue what I was doing lurking around. No harm done, however, once I told him what I was up to and that I had permission from his boss, he recovered without requiring CPR.

It was a gray and chilly day here, the type of weather that really dampens one's enthusiasm for photography. I tried some more blurry trees on my afternoon walk with the dogs, and with a fair bit of work in Lightroom I came up with this. If it succeeds at all, at the very least it captures the mood of the day.

Stopped by the greenhouse this afternoon for my daily photo. It wasn't quite 4 pm and the sun was starting to set (my, how I hate these short days--midday is practically evening), so I caught the light on the plastic covered and vine streaked window.

It was another unseasonably warm and lovely day here in Connecticut, so I really should have put more effort into my photography, but I'm still feeling quite wrung out by this lingering Lyme Disease. Thus, another quick run down to Cos Cob harbor for my daily photo. Most of the boats have been pulled from the water, so a spot that presented some wonderful boat shots this summer now offers up just the pure geometry of empty docks.

A quick stop down at the harbor for my photo of the day. The late afternoon light was so beautiful, though I did enhance the golden tones in Lightroom.

My daughter's drama class put on a show of "experimental" (to be kind) pieces this evening; I took a set up shot of the red curtain to test the light and wound up liking it more than anything else I took today. I wish there was a single prop or person in the shot, but my camera was too loud and obtrusive for me to catch the kids in the act.
