DailyPhotos > Melissa OShaughnessy  > Photo-a-Day > Photo of the Day 2009
On February 11, 2009, bored by the winter weather and in need of a creative project, I decided to challenge myself to take a photo every day for a year. I didn't, at first, plan on "going public" with my photos (this may be painfully obvious if you look at the earliest photos in this gallery), but once I joined the SmugMug Daily Photo Community and started receiving such great support from all the members here, I started working a little harder and taking the undertaking more seriously. Thus far, the project has been (mostly) a joy and a creative boon, although there are those days when I wake up wondering what on earth I'm going to photograph. Yet the great thing I've learned on this journey is that there's ALWAYS something, if I just look hard enough.

Stopped by the greenhouse this afternoon for my daily photo. It wasn't quite 4 pm and the sun was starting to set (my, how I hate these short days--midday is practically evening), so I caught the light on the plastic covered and vine streaked window.

It was another unseasonably warm and lovely day here in Connecticut, so I really should have put more effort into my photography, but I'm still feeling quite wrung out by this lingering Lyme Disease. Thus, another quick run down to Cos Cob harbor for my daily photo. Most of the boats have been pulled from the water, so a spot that presented some wonderful boat shots this summer now offers up just the pure geometry of empty docks.

A quick stop down at the harbor for my photo of the day. The late afternoon light was so beautiful, though I did enhance the golden tones in Lightroom.

My daughter's drama class put on a show of "experimental" (to be kind) pieces this evening; I took a set up shot of the red curtain to test the light and wound up liking it more than anything else I took today. I wish there was a single prop or person in the shot, but my camera was too loud and obtrusive for me to catch the kids in the act.

Returning again to the much explored theme of bare trees and motion blur--hey, it was this or the puppy! Jet lagged and running out of ideas...

I only had a short time this morning--before my flight home--to hit the streets of San Francisco for my photo of the day. This back alley caught my eye, so I waited for a pedestrian to walk into the scene. I couldn't resist this color treatment, for obvious reasons.

We arrived in San Francisco this afternoon after our wonderful weekend in the Napa Valley; the view from our hotel room included a glimpse of the iconic Transamerica building. I played around in Lightroom to make the scene look a bit surreal.

The golden light on the yellowing grape vines caught my eye on my morning walk. The Napa Valley really is a gorgeous landscape.

Visited the O'Shaughnessy Winery in the Napa Valley today (c'mon, we had to). We've been fans of their delicious wines for years, and not just because of the name--we even served their wine at my son's wedding last month. The winery is beautiful, and their cave is carved into the hillside, in the shape of an O. Cool place.
